This walnut bookstand was commissioned as 65th birthday present for a client’s spouse. They have a very small room in the house which has been converted into a library. Both are avid scrabble players and readers and are constantly consulting their large dictionary. Lifting the large book off and onto the bookshelf was cumbersome and they wanted an attractive way of displaying it so that it was always at hand. The client also wanted the piece to maintain a light feel to it so that it did not appear overwhelming in the room. The small drawer at the top was designed to house magnifying and reading glasses, pencils and paper. The client also wanted to display some of their oversized books.
The height of the stand was determined based on the height of the clients. This three-shelf bookstand with beautifully flaring legs addressed the functional needs of the client while at the same time maintaining its integrity as a piece of art in its own right.
